A project about the Coloured community through furniture.

A Cabinet

What do you call the thing you picked and where does it go?

I don’t even know I think it’s actually a wine cabinet but we just call it a cabinet

Why did you pick this furniture piece?

It really fits the “vintage” kind of profile

Explain what this furniture piece means to you or your family/friends?

It’s where all the smart crockery gets kept so when you’re younger that means do not touch it’s for visitors only

Tell me a story around this furniture piece? A memory, a thought or something that happened recently.

Whenever visitors came you had to get the glasses or teacups out of this cabinet for them to drink cooldrink or tea

How does this piece of furniture make you feel?

Nostalgic thinking of the memories surrounding it

Do you think this piece of furniture represents us as Coloureds? Why?

Definitely, we always had to have a special place to save those cherished items

How would you describe your interpretation of Colouredness?

I find Colouredness to be multi layered, it has multiple meanings to me including complex identitites & cultures.

What other things strongly represent Colouredness?

Definitely language like Kombuis Afrikaans

What does it mean to be Coloured in South Africa now?

I love that the younger generation own their “Colouredness” proudly & wear it as a badge of honour. We always had to separate it from ourselves in our working environments when were younger, to be less “Coloured” in how we spoke. Today it’s more a case of, take me as I am which is a nuanced, richly textured person.

What is your relationship with your Colouredness?

I embrace it as it is where I come from & who I am.
