A project about the Coloured community through furniture.

Imbuia Bedroom suite

What do you call the thing you picked and where does it go?

Imbuia Bedroom suite

Why did you pick this furniture piece?

Because it’s uncommon and not everyone can afford it.

Explain what this furniture piece means to you or your family/friends?

This suite was part of my wedding room or as they say “bruidskamer”

Tell me a story around this furniture piece? A memory, a thought or something that happened recently.

When I walked into my “bruidskamer” the room was so small and the suite was so big, I had to climb over my bed to get to the dressing table which was my favourite piece of furniture because I had a glass jewellery box where I would keep all my valuables safe, even my money.

How does this piece of furniture make you feel?

Whenever I walked into my room I felt overwhelmed because it brought back lot’s of memories from my wedding day.

Do you think this piece of furniture represents us as Coloureds? Why?

Yes, because we were poor and when you purchase something expensive it makes you feel “kwaai”.

How would you describe your interpretation of Colouredness?

Colouredness does exist but my interpretation of a colored Is that they always make a plan regarding everything in their lives, like they say a coloured “skrik vir niks”.

What other things strongly represent Colouredness?

If you see someone at the shop with a gown and slippers then it’s definitely a coloured.

What does it mean to be Coloured in South Africa now?

There’s lot’s of challenges that come with being a coloured because there’s lot’s of stereotypes, also some people still look down on coloureds.

What is your relationship with your Colouredness?

Growing up in cape town in a coloured community and being Muslim I classify myself as a “Cape Malay Coloured”
