A project about the Coloured community through furniture.

The Ball and Claw Cabinet

What do you call the thing you picked and where does it go?

Neh bra, let’s for example take the ball and claw cabinet first. That one if you had him in the house those days, then you guys are alright. Remember the most priced possession on display would have been the second item I’ve uploaded the antique blue and and white dinner set.

That was only use during festive season. Other then that you’ll dust it off month after the month for the entire year. Plus in this cabinet jrrr you’ll find every souvenir that basically represents all the weddings the family ever attended. This can range from confetti to old sweets in a lace wrapping lol those pink and white okies. (as a child I use to steal them, I mean really sweets are not for display) To make the cabinet multifunctional, eish you’ll see some funeral pamphlets in there as well. This one I did not approve of looking at dead relatives smiling at you as laatie neh man that was wrong of our parents to dalla like that. Now I was made to believe that this cabinet once housed a gramma phone. That was way before my time because where the gramma phone used to be was now the filling cabinet. Tjo I’m talking about letters an documents that was older then me. But you dare try and clear them out. The tannie will have your head on platter you must leave it, lol guess why ? incase someone might ask for it jrrr the companies which was on there was already closed and I guess the managers and leaders dead, but we had proof they all existed once lol. This cabinet served many purposes, let’s not forget that it was also a picture frame for those photo’s with no frame hulle was net so ge stuck in the frame van die display. You age determined where your picture goes. Kids on the side and the main people on the front so it can be seen. Jrrr my picture was on the side facing the wall, that’s what you get when you the laat lammertjie. Now the blue and white antique dinner set, that brings back fond memories. Like I said this only came out festive season. So basically for me it represented lekker food, you know throughout the year there’s no tong, turkey , cold meats , leg of lamb, bra these we could only afford once a year and that was during festive so these blue and white plates where basically never empty or half empty and they always retuned to the kitchen clean lol yah neh those where the days.

Why did you pick this furniture piece?

It represented the journey of my life as well as my parents, from many celebratory events to some sad events which where all indirectly displayed in the cabinet. If we had visitors they would look through the cabinet and it’s display and sometimes ask questions about weddings, funerals and just pictures that were displayed and you could see the pride in which either my mother of my father would explain the context or the scenario of the event. The antique dinners set as much as it was catching dust through out the year, looking at it gives you the assurance that better days are coming. One also need to understand it was during festive season when the entire family would get together and those where boss time.

Explain what this furniture piece means to you or your family/friends?

These items basically identified my families culture. Create and cherish moments. Celebrate life and never forget those who has passed away. These where the main items my siblings where interested in inheriting after the passing of my parents.

Tell me a story around this furniture piece? A memory, a thought or something that happened recently.

With just being at funeral with the passing of our old neighbor. After the service one has to through the pamphlet away. In days back I would have given it to my mother to add to her collection of loved ones lost in the cabinet.

How does this piece of furniture make you feel?

I guess considering the upbringing we did not really have much or we were not in a position to own video recorders, Hey but that display pappa that was history right there and you needed your mom or your dad to narrate the stories. So I feel proud of these two items it’s represent my legacy.

Do you think this piece of furniture represents us as Coloureds? Why?

No doubt, where else would you find a display with things you cant use. It’s only to be looked at and cleaned whenever the tannie feels it’s required. You dare break something during the cleaning process and put a photo where it was not. This this with all the items is printed in the tannies head she knows the order. This was a way for us as a people to capture moments and memories.

How would you describe your interpretation of Colouredness?

A unique and diverse people, there’s just certain things you cant grasp unless you grew up Coloured. I mean really who’s food is better , the slang we use it’s tops and it’s kwaai only we can relate to certain things and the emotions attached to it. Look today we are the leaders in any type of blom. Ok nxa chill and we nxa to have a lekker tyd. Colouredness for me represents the ultimate finesse

What other things strongly represent Colouredness?

Swearing lol … but it must be in afrikaans. Jrrr neh my people can hurt you with words and it sound well rehearsed the why we can rhyme. Community overall there is no community like a Coloured community. Things has definitely changed over the years but back in the day. You where the son of the entire street any aunty or uncle could send you to the shop. No questions ask, plus you is you catch on nonsense (kak) the same applies you’ll get a hiding from the first uncle of aunty that sees you and then again at home eish that as rough.

What does it mean to be Coloured in South Africa now?

The sad reality is that we are seen as, drug dealers, alcoholics and gangsters. That narrative we need to change look at any South African sitcom or move look at the stereotype roles and characters we are given to play. Altyd n skollie.

What is your relationship with your Colouredness?

Proudly Coloured. It’s who I am and I don’t hide it.
We need to be more deliberate in changing the coloured narrative. Our Colouredness needs more exposure for people to be able to better understand what lekker people we are and how nxa it is to blom with us and we are top leaders man.
