A project about the Coloured community through furniture.

Glass Kassie

What do you call the thing you picked and where does it go?

The Glass Kassie, in the fancy lounge or in a corner where visitors can see it

Why did you pick this furniture piece?

Growing up I saw a lot of people who had this at their house or different variations of it. I think most people can relate to this.

Explain what this furniture piece means to you or your family/friends?

My Ouma’s glass kassie had all the fancy and special stuff inside it, and my Oupa who practices Sufism put a picture of one of the Sheigh of the Naqshibandi from Cyprus on the front of it. My grandparents put the fancy plates and glasses in this cabinet including this crystal swan and these really cool ZamZam glasses.

Tell me a story around this furniture piece? A memory, a thought or something that happened recently.

Growing up the picture o the outside would always freak me out cause it seemed like the guy was always looking at you no matter where you were standing and my older cousins would make up stories about why Oupa put the picture there and scare us.

How does this piece of furniture make you feel?

For some reason the Zamzam glasses stick out, I can’t remember why

Do you think this piece of furniture represents us as Coloureds? Why?

This best represents Coloureds because I saw it in every Coloured home I went to and it almost always had crystal swans in it with fancy plates and glasses. so I feel a lot of people will relate to this piece of furniture, not Coloureds
