A project about the Coloured community through furniture.

The Table

What do you call the thing you picked and where does it go?

A table, it was in my grandparents lounge.

Why did you pick this furniture piece?

I thought it was interesting that my grandparents use to put photos under the glass top of the table and later on even a calendar even though there was almost always a table cloth over it. I grew up around this furniture piece.

Explain what this furniture piece means to you or your family/friends?

I remember when we still lived with my grandparents, everything would revolve around this table, family discussions, homework, events and interesting conversations the adults would have with the random guys my granddad brought with almost every Friday after mosque. We would always use this table for all the big events at the house.

Tell me a story around this furniture piece? A memory, a thought or something that happened recently.

I remember, when I was younger living in Paarl. The tempratures would hit upwards of 40 degrees and my brother and I would run around in our underwear cause it was way to hot to be wearing clothes and play underneath the table until our parents decided it was way to hot and drive into Cape Town to my other gran.

How does this piece of furniture make you feel?

I have great memories about and around this table and it always makes me happy thinking about it.

Do you think this piece of furniture represents us as Coloureds? Why?

I feel Coloured people are really committed to keeping family and friend bonds strong through generations and having such a staple piece of furniture is a great way to not only pass it through the generations to come, but also somehow allows everyone to share the ‘same’ memory that they had as kids, parents and grandparents alike.
