A project about the Coloured community through furniture.

Linen Kist

What do you call the thing you picked and where does it go?

Linen Kist and it goes in the bedroom

Why did you pick this furniture piece?

Brings back fond memories and it was a piece of furniture that I noticed in many bedrooms of the older generation.

Explain what this furniture piece means to you or your family/friends?

More than 50 years old and always had doillies and family photos on top

Tell me a story around this furniture piece? A memory, a thought or something that happened recently.

My mother used to take care of her “toddler” grandchildren while their parents were at work. My mother would lay my nephew down to sleep while she continued with the household chores. After a while, thinking he is asleep we would hear knocking sounds coming from the room, only to find him sitting on the floor, wide awake, playing with the brass flap/lock on the front of the kist….. Well….no child is going to break her things. Then new arrangements…on Monday mornings the kist was turned back to front and rearranged again on Friday afternoon when the grandchild went home. This was the same course of events with 3 of her grandchildren.

How does this piece of furniture make you feel?

Very sentimental

Do you think this piece of furniture represents us as Coloureds? Why?

We are a proud community and take care of our possessions so that it can be passed on from generation to generation

How would you describe your interpretation of Colouredness?

Unique and we stand out

What other things strongly represent Colouredness?

Determined and hardworking. Everything we possess and have achieved is as a result of our determination and hard work.

What is your relationship with your Colouredness?

Proud of my Heritage
