A project about the Coloured community through furniture.

Wall Unit

What do you call the thing you picked and where does it go?

Wall Unit in lounge

Why did you pick this furniture piece?

Sentimental value to my granny

Explain what this furniture piece means to you or your family/friends?

My granny’s and family stayed in Distric 6. Forcefull removals came and they were dumped in Bonteheweul. Her parents passed on, coming for a very poor fam, there’s not really much to inherit. Her one brother and sisters decide to share what was left of their parents and my granny got the wall unit.

Tell me a story around this furniture piece? A memory, a thought or something that happened recently.

Growing up in Bonteheweul with that unit in our lounch, was like entering a masjid and you cant go stand where the Imam stands to lead salaah. Jy kan nie naby daai stuk ark kom nie dan sal granny jou soe hard skreeu laat jy jou sal vrek skrik. Daai wall unit was gepolish en what not laat jy jou gesig daar in kon sien.

How does this piece of furniture make you feel?

Thinking back as an adult, I actually miss the days me and granny spend unpacking the unit. Omw, the unit was one thing, the stuff inside jy willie wiet wat sal gebeur as jy n mistake maak en iets wat uit daai ark kom en laat val op die grond nie…

Do you think this piece of furniture represents us as Coloureds? Why?

Definitely, it represents…Coloureds were and some are very very meticulous and holy over their furniture. Jy kan uit die armste huis gekom het, ma die funiture ma altyd gelys soes die inwooners ryk was.

How would you describe your interpretation of Colouredness?

Unique, diverse, multi talented, skilled, educated and one hell of a kind

What other things strongly represent Colouredness?

The lingo, vier tanne uit voor, foolishness. En ek dink because coloured is a mixture van different bloodline, they inherited some craziness
